Jason Dunigan sets new Pro Stock 1000 world record
|
Jason Dunigan, Jackson, MI set a new Pro Stock 1000 world record this weekend during the
IHRA Amalie Oil North American Nationals at New England Dragway in Epping, NH. Dunigan
ran an incredible 8.458 @ 154.09mph during the first round of eliminations on Sunday,
which blew away both ends of the former PS1000 asphalt record. But the Dunigan Racing
Team did not stop there... they went on to back up their ET record by setting it even lower
in the second round of eliminations to an outstanding 8.427. What a weekend for Dunigan
Racing! Check out the full weekend results on the Competition Plus website.

Points were awarded based on qualifying order and Paul Austin
of Ellensburg, Washington takes the lead followed closely by Jeff
Cullen of Gray, Maine. Jeff also won the first of 5 Camoplast
asphalt tracks to be awarded at each race for his top speed
during qualifying.
Thank you to all of the racers who made the trip. The NSA Pro
Stock sleds put on an excellent show for the fans and exceeded
the expectations of both the PRP track management and IHRA
officials. Looks like we're off to a great start this season!

Jason Dunigan wins at Pittsburgh Raceway Park!
Congratulations to Jason Dunigan on his second event win of the season! Jason won this final on a hole shot over the quicker sled of Kenny Burlew.
Everyone fought through the threat of rain and incredible humidity on race day, but the competition was still tough with another close field.
Thanks to everyone who came out for this event. It was a great weekend!
|
Casey Mulkins wins at NYIRP!
This was a race for the record books. The top 9
sleds in qualifying ran an 8.88 or better, making
this one of the closest fields in Pro Stock asphalt
sled history. This race could have been won by
any one of the 14 sleds that made the field, but it
was Casey Mulkins on Chuck Hamrah’s 2006 Ski-
Doo RT who took the win at NYIRP. Casey’s sled
was flying all day, beginning with his #1 qualifying
pass during the 1st session of the day, all the way
through his last pass landing him in the winner’s
circle. Congratulations to both Chuck and Casey on winning a very competitive event.
Congratulations also go out to Ron McBurney and Tim Spencer on their 2nd runner
up finish of the season. Ron and Tim are off to a great start in just their first season
on the asphalt. All of their hard work is paying off as Tim took over 1st place in points!
Special thanks go out to NYIRP for hosting the NSA Pro Stock sleds. This was an
awesome race at a first class facility and we can’t wait to pay them another visit.
San Marino Racing wins in NH! Jeremy Hannen (San Marino Racing) took the win from the #1 qualifying spot this weekend at New England Dragway in Epping, NH. This was another awesome weekend of racing for the NSA Pro Stocks. It began on Saturday with 19 sleds trying to get into the 16-sled field. And on Sunday, several sleds were in the 50's & 60's, but no one could drive around the San Marino Firecat.
|
Congratulations to Jay Pearl on his 2nd place finish this weekend at NED. The Bangor Motorsports Arctic Cat was flying all weekend!
|
Jeremy Hannen (San Marino Racing)
2006 NSA Pro Stock Sled Points Champion
|
San Marino Racing takes all in Maryland!
|
Jeremy Hannen and the San Marino Racing Team had their Firecat flying in the heat at MIR! Hannen was battling for the 2006 NSA Points Championship with Jason Dunigan (Dunigan Racing) and as with all great points series, the decision came down to the final round on Saturday night. It was Hannen who was victorious, earning the event win and clinching the top spot in points. As the points champion, Hannen will be flying the # 1 next season and wearing a brand new $1200 custom leather suit from Vanson Leathers.
|
Congratulations to Jason Dunigan on his runner up spot at MIR. This was an exciting final points event for all of the competitors and fans.
An excellent showing was made by all of the Pro Stock Sled Teams at this last points race. Thanks to all of the competitors, team owners & sponsors for making this series so successful!
|
We didn’t have the fall New England air we were expecting this weekend to assist in breaking the Pro Stock 1000cc World Record held by Jason Dunigan, but we did see some very fast sleds at the Camoplast Challenge on Saturday.

Epping, NH - Jeremy Hannen of San Marino Racing takes the Camoplast Title at New England Dragway in Epping, NH on his '06 Firecat in a close final round against Jeff Cullen on the Team Abbott '06 Polaris Fusion. According to the riders, this was one of the closest races in asphalt racing history starting with both pilots having identical reaction times! Cullen’s sled appeared to have the advantage as the San Marino sled was a little out of shape on the start, but Hannen showed his riding talent as he moved the sled back into the groove and edged past Cullen for the win.
Congratulations to both teams for their well-deserved finish.

Leicester, New York -
Ed Armstrong (Holyoke, MA) and his team nailed
the set up on their Yamaha and took the win on
Saturday from the #2 qualifying spot. Jason
Dunigan gave Armstrong a run in the final with
his better reaction time, but Armstrong’s sled
was quicker, earning him the win.
17 Pro Stock sleds were entered for the first
race of the 2007 NSA Tour last weekend in New
York. It was very hot and humid on Saturday
with temps in the mid 90’s but we saw some
impressive numbers out of all the teams in spite
of the overwhelming heat. Race results here
The next NSA Pro Stock sled event, presented
by Cudney Racing, will be held on Saturday,
June 16th at Toronto Motorsports Park, Cayuga,
Ontario as part of the KC Auto Family Day
Thunder Fest. For more information, visit the

Jeff Cullen (Gray, ME) won the 2nd NSA
Pro Stock points event of the season
last weekend at Toronto Motorsports
Park in Cayuga, Ontario. Cullen
qualified 3rd on the Abbott’s Power
Equipment Polaris and faced several
tough competitors throughout the day.
In the final round, Cullen met Ed
Armstrong (Holyoke, MA) who qualified
4th on the A2Z Racing Yamaha and had
run a career best 8.44 ET during round
1 of eliminations. It was Cullen who was
victorious in this crazy final where
Armstrong fouled a plug and Cullen
broke a belt! With a little luck and a
better reaction time, Cullen managed to
stay out front and get the win.
Paul Austin set a new Pro Stock 1000cc
national MPH record of 155.10mph
during qualifying on Saturday and
backed it up with several 154+mph
passes throughout the day. Austin also
earned $250 from King Motorsports for
being the first NSA Pro Stock sled in the
8.40’s this season with an awesome
8.429 elapsed time.

Paul Austin (Jackson, MI) made a huge statement the NSA race during the IHRA Pro Am
event at Pittsbugh Raceway Park in New Alexandria, PA on July 7, 2007. Austin qualified
number one in the 11-sled field, followed closely by points contenders Jeremy Hannen,
Jeff Cullen, Kristin Stanley and Ed Armstrong. Austin would go on to win the event in a
very close final round against Jeremy Hannen (Durand, MI) of San Marino Racing.
Austin lowered the bar even further after making the quickest pass in Pro Stock asphalt
sled history with an amazing 8.355 elapsed time in round 3 of eliminations!
Austin took a huge jump in the points chase as did Jay Pearl (Newport, ME) on his
Bangor Motorsports Arctic Cat. Pearl was going rounds in eliminations until he met up
with Austin in the semifinal. Pearl witnessed first-hand what an 8.35-second sled looks
like in the opposite lane!
Paul Austin runs 8.355 in Pittsburgh and takes the win!

Jeff Cullen (Gray, ME) took over the NSA
championship points lead with his win in
Maryland. Driving the Abbott’s Power
Equipment Polaris IQ, Cullen took out
the quicker sled of Paul Austin (Jackson,
MI) in the final round with his better
reaction time. Cullen qualified #3 in the
15-sled field on Saturday and faced
several tough competitors throughout
the day, including then current points
leader Ed Armstrong (Holyoke, MA).
Armstrong and Cullen faced off in the
semi’s in a heated battle for points and
this time it was Cullen who was victorious.

MIR set the scene for an incredible day of racing this weekend during their Outback
Steakhouse Jet Wars show, where several of the NSA Pro Stock sleds set career best
elapsed times. While still in his rookie year, Ken Lund (Brunswick, ME) ran an outstanding
career best 8.463 ET and 152+ mph on Saturday. The Wise Man Racing team from Maine
spent some serious time testing this summer and figured out an excellent set-up for their ’04
Polaris! The first round of eliminations also set the tone for a very fast race day - Jeremy
Hannen (Durand, MI) ran a career best 8.428 ET on the San Marino Racing FireCat as did
Jay Pearl (Newport, ME) with an 8.517 ET on his Bangor Motor Sports Arctic Cat.
Cullen takes over points lead with win in Maryland
Austin would add to his already impressive
runner up spot by setting a new NSA PS1000 ET
record on Saturday at MIR with an outstanding
8.353 pass during the 1st round of eliminations.
As if that wasn’t enough, Austin would back up
this run with an incredible 8.213 pass in the 2nd
round of eliminations! On both passes, Austin’s
sled left the starting line like a bullet and crossed
the finish line the same way! It was a jaw-
dropping sight and an amazing pass.
With 8 sleds running in the 8.40’s and 8.50’s on Saturday, the NSA Pro Stock’s have set
the tone for an incredible end of the season race on September 8th at New England
Dragway in Epping, NH.

Congratulations to Jeff Cullen (Gray, ME)
on clinching the 2007 NSA Championship
points series on the Abbott’s Power
Equipment Polaris IQ. Cullen qualified 3rd
for the fifth straight time this season during
the Camoplast Asphalt Challenge in
Epping, NH. Mother Nature was not kind
to us that day as a heavy thunderstorm
came through in the late afternoon and
intermittent showers continued throughout
the evening, which forced the track to
eventually cancel all competition classes.
Jeff Cullen wins the 2007 NSA Championship!

Jeff Cullen & David Abbott - 2007 NSA Champions
|
The A2Z Racing Team of Ed Armstrong, Bob Girrior and Dan Zering also sealed up the
2nd place Championship points spot after qualifying on Saturday. The Yamaha team from
Massachusetts struggled during the second half of the season but after coming out early
in the year with a win, they set themselves apart from the pack and clinched the 2nd place
spot in 2007. We all wanted to see a battle between Armstrong and Cullen for the
Championship Title, but the inclement weather prevented that from happening this day.
Cullen will be wearing a new set of custom racing
leathers from Vanson® Leathers next season. For
over 30 years, Vanson® has been producing the
highest quality track tested apparel and safety
garments available and we'd like to thank them for
supporting the NSA Pro Stock asphalt sled program
for the 3rd straight season.

Kenny Burlew (Thiells, NY) ran a career-best 8.497 elapsed time on the Chuckaroo
Motorsports Skidoo at Epping qualifying 2nd just behind Steve Stanley (Gray, ME) on the
Paul Austin Motorsports Skidoo. Gary Schweikert (Slatington, PA) also ran a career-best
8.598 ET on Saturday at New England Dragway putting him in the 4th spot.
Now in its third year of operation, the National Speed Association continues to enjoy
strong fan popularity and for 2007 presented some of the best Pro Stock asphalt sled
racing in North America. NSA traveled to several drag strips in 2007, including NYIRP
near Buffalo, NY, Toronto Motorsports Park in Ontario, Canada, Pittsburgh Raceway Park
in Pittsburgh, PA, the legendary Maryland Int’l Raceway at Budds Creek, and the season-
closer at New England Dragway.
The NSA Pro Stock sled tour has been a great success with several different winners
amongst the Ontario, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania
teams. Cullen is now added to the list of great Champions from the last 3 seasons -
Jeremy Hannen (Durand, MI) in 2006 and Jason Dunigan (Jackson, MI) in 2005. Who will
it be next year?
Kenny Burlew injured in testing accident
Kenny Burlew was injured in an accident at New England
Dragway during testing on Saturday October 6th.
Kenny ran an 8.52 at 152mph on this early morning
pass, but something went wrong as he let off the throttle
sending the sled and Kenny into the guard wall. Kenny
slid across the tar as the sled tumbled and rolled across
the track, eventually stopping at the right guard wall.
Kenny suffered a broken ankle & leg, as well as cuts
and bruises from the impact. The track safety crew was
on the scene quickly and Kenny was transported to the
local hospital where he was cleared of any head injuries
and his cuts were attended to.
Kenny will be undergoing several surgeries
over the next few weeks to properly repair his
broken bones. The NSA members
unanimously voted to donate the unused
purse from the rained out Epping, NH event to
Kenny Burlew and his family. The Burlew’s
will be faced with numerous medical bills over
the next few months and hopefully this small
contribution will help.
If you wish to make a donation to support the Burlew family, it can be mailed to Kenny
Burlew, 11 Locust Drive, Thiells, NY 10984. Thoughts and get-well wishes can also be
sent to Kenny via email at rockmotor@verizon.net

Dave Dunigan wins new snowmobile in Kenny Burlew benefit raffle
Dave Dunigan (Jackson, MI) was the winner of the 2008 SkiDoo MX-Z Rev XP 800 snowmobile in the Kenny Burlew benefit raffle. The benefit organizer, Chuck Hamrah, held the drawing at the Old Forge Shootout in New York in early December where Dunigan’s name was drawn. Only minutes after receiving the news, Dunigan generously donated his newly acquired prize to Burlew.
Dave Dunigan loves snowmobile racing and has been a huge supporter of the sport throughout his entire life. It’s no surprise to anyone in the sled racing community that he would make such a generous donation to a racer in need. Dave and his son Jason have been racing snowmobiles on grass, ice and asphalt for many years and have participated in and supported the NSA Pro Stock asphalt snowmobile series since its inception in 2005. Jason and Dave have been very successful during their many years of racing, including several event wins as well as the 2005 NSA Championship Points Title.
Kenny Burlew is doing very well despite the long healing process. He had his permanent cast removed on December 20th and has been fitted with a removable boot that he’ll wear until the end of January. He still has to rely on crutches because the doctors don’t want any weight on the newly repaired ankle, but he will begin physical therapy just after the first of the year and expects to quickly regain full movement in his foot. If a positive attitude helps the healing process, Kenny will be back on his feet again very soon.
A special thank you goes out to Chuck Hamrah for organizing this wonderful benefit for Kenny Burlew. Chuck has contributed countless hours of his time and energy into organizing the raffle, all to help his friend and fellow racer.

2007 Season Highlights - This incredible season of racing cannot end without first
recognizing some tremendous race teams.
The most impressive team of the year would
be the Wise Man Racing Team of Andy
Emmertz (Owner), Ken Lund (Rider) and Andy
Palmer (Crew). The Polaris team from Maine
made a huge leap forward in just their first
year of Pro Stock asphalt sled racing with an
incredible 8.46 pass at Maryland Int’l
Raceway in August. Andy Emmertz prides
himself on his true Pro Stock roots – this sled
is built on a Polaris Edge chassis with a 128”
asphalt track on a 121” suspension. The motor is a HTG 1000cc 72mm stroke, 77.5 bore
and uses a stock Polaris ignition. Talk about getting it done!
September. Chuck Hamrah (Owner), Kenny Burlew
(Rider) and Robbie & Roby Clough (Crew) spent a
ton of time on the dyno and in testing during the
summer and it finally paid off with this awesome pass!
First we need to recognize the Chuckaroo Motorsports racing team. Kenny Burlew ran a
career best 8.49ET on his Chuckaroo Skidoo at the New England Dragway NSA race in
Gary Schweikert (Owner/Rider) and his son Michael (Crew) made a great end-of-the season pass on his R/T chassis with an 8.59 ET at New England Dragway in September. The father / son team from Slatington, PA made huge gains this season and with a few minor modifications over the winter, they’ll have that thing in the 40’s at the first race next spring. And if everything goes as planned, we’ll see a roll reversal within the next few years as son Michael plans to jump on that Pro Stock and show dad how it’s done!
|
Last but certainly not least, NSA must recognize the Scooter Boy Racing / Big-E Racing Team from New York. Eric Conklin (Owner) and Scott Marsh (Rider) made an awesome 8.77 debut pass on their brand new, absolutely beautiful Pro Stock Skidoo at New England Dragway in September. Conklin definitely deserves recognition for the best looking Pro Stock 1000cc asphalt sled in the country! His attention to detail with this build was incredible and cannot go unnoticed. It's beautiful!
